Where Is Mr. Fine Wine?
Bio: Mr. Fine Wine grew up in Detroit in the 1960s and '70s, surrounded by
music and by music-industry people. He went to school with the offspring
of Motown stars; his uncle (believe it or not!) taught John Lee Hooker how
to play guitar chords and owned the local record label Tuba. An avid
collector of soul 45s for 25 years, Fine Wine started DJ'ing soon after he
relocated to New York City. His radio show, "Downtown Soulville"
(www.wfmu.org/playlists/sv), has been converting casual listeners around
the globe into soul freaks since 1994. TimeOut London magazine called it
one of the best independent music podcasts in the world. In addition to
presiding over many local dance parties through the years (including the
Empire State Soul Club, Bumpshop, and Horse River Social), he has held
down a weekly residency at Manhattan dive bar Botanica since 1996--perhaps
the longest-running weekly soul-45 listening party in the world, and one
that has attracted visiting luminaries such as Keb Darge, Ian Wright,
Butch, Egon, Dante Carfagna, Tim Brown, Sami Dariush, and Cut Chemist.
Countries where Fine Wine has DJ'd with his across-the-board mix of R&B,
soul, blues, and funk include Spain, Turkey, Russia, Scotland, England,
Canada, Norway, and Germany, and he has backed the likes of the Mighty
Hannibal, the Gories, Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, Brian Auger, Dee Dee
Ramone, DJ Shadow, the Detroit Cobras, Cody Black, Rudy Ray Moore, and
Nathaniel Mayer. He has also compiled and written liner notes for the
collections "Vital Organs" (Grooovysounds Unltd.) and "Crash of Thunder"
(Vampisoul) and is working on two new compilations for Vampisoul. Fine
Wine and his friend the Mighty Hannibal are the subjects of a
feature-length documentary film, currently in production, called
"Showtime."
East Houston Street, between Mulberry and Mott, downstairs; 10 till late;
free)
Tune in Friday nights from 7-8 PM on WFMU.
AND starting this very Saturday night, join Fine Wine and Jonathan Toubin (New York Night Train) for the debut of their new monthly 60's Soul night, Out Of This World!! It's located in the old Supreme Trading spot at 213 N. 8th Street, B/W Roebling & Driggs, Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Also free.
And, if you're in Helsinki or St. Petersburg:
31 OCTOBER: Soul Sides @ Kuudes Linja, Helsinki http://www.soulsides.fi/
1 NOVEMBER: Something else in Helsinki with Sami
5 NOVEMBER: Druzba bar, St. Petersburg
6 NOVEMBER: Fun City Shingaling, Stereobar (Gorohovaya 49), St. Petersburg
Here's a current top 11, all of which should
be in the box at these gigs:
1. Fenton Robinson "Tennessee Woman" (Duke) ( R & B )
2. Maurice and the Radiants "I Gotta Dance to Keep My Baby" (Chess) (R&B/soul)
3. The Lindreals "The Waltz" (Kim) (soul)
4. Tony Drake "Suddenly" (Brunswick) (funky soul)
5. Tito Puente "A La Salud" (RCA Victor) (Latin R & B )
6. Arthur Griswold "Pretty Mama Blues" (Fortune) (R&B/blues)
7. Odessa Harris "You're What I Need" (Uptown) (soul)
8. Little Willie John "Don't Play With Love" (King) ( R & B )
9. Jimmy Toliver "Come Shine" (T & T) (blues/funk)
10. Williams Brothers "Rap On" (Twain) (funk)

Ghost Riders In The Sky, Lawrence Welk Style
This 1961 Lawrence Welk Show clip might just comprise the coolest two minutes in the show's history. Guitarist Neil LeVang completely nails Ghost Riders In The Sky, along with considerable help and atmospherics from the entire LW Orchestra.

Kogar's Spooky Spectacular
Ichiban Head Honcho Debbie D was kind enough to let me post a Halloween themed compilation I put together last year for my myspace blog. It's been retooled a little bit and Michael Deforge did an amazing "cover" for it. Check out his website for more amazing work.
http://www.kingtrash.com/
When I put this together I wanted to stay away from the usual novelty type Halloween songs. That's why something like THE FABULOUS WAILERS lead it off with a great eerie instrumental. Listen to that song and try NOT to think of people barricaded in a house fighting marauding (slow moving!) zombies!
Enjoy, and Happy Halloween...

Hawaii Five Oh No!
CBS has announced that they've finally cleared all the legal hurdles and are moving forward with plans to revive Hawaii Five-O.
Will it be worthwhile? Are remade television series (or feature films, for that matter) ever very exciting? I'm dubious. If you're hungering for the originals, CBS has posted quite a few full-length episodes from the show's first 2 seasons.
Below is a pretty fascinating clip, showing the retooled open from a 1990s attempt to get the show back on the air. Believe it or not, Garey Busey was to star in the Steve McGarrett role.
